Cannes 2014 Day 2

*legende* Mike Leigh a la conference de presse de Mr. Turner. One of the highlights today was Mr. TurnerMike Leigh’s biopic about the painter William Turner. Supported by a gorgeous cinematography, the film portrays the artist as a dandy struggling in a world which is evolving rapidly, most particularly with the emergence of trains, steam boats and photography. While he is a highly flawed figure with poor social skills, we can feel his sensibility which is translated through his beautiful landscape paintings. In the title role, the actor Timothy Spall delivers an award-worthy strong and nuanced performance. As for the film, a trimmer cut would have been more effective, Mr. Turner feeling 30 minutes too long.

Today also marked the opening of Un Certain Regard with the screening of Party Girl, a love story between an aging cabaret hostess and one of her clients. This touching work stars newcomer Angélique Litzenburger, a non-professional actress playing pretty much herself.
