Cannes Film Festival 2016: Day 11

Cannes film festival 2016: Isabelle Huppert

Cannes film festival 2016: Day 11 with Isabelle Huppert (c) Moland Fengkov

With the festival nearing its end and the crowd getting thinner, now is the time for a recap. But before we get started, let’s cover Paul Verhoeven’s Elle which was screened this morning. Starring a glorious Isabelle Huppert (see picture above), this movie is adapation of a novel by Philippe Djian, a popular French writer and lyricist. This powerful rape revenge flick might aspire to getting the much-coveted Palme d’Or and Ms. Huppert should certainly be in the running for a best actress nod. She should however get some serious competition from Kristen Stewart (Personal shopper), Sonia Braga (Aquarius) and Adèle Haenel (The Unknown Girl), as mentioned in our previous Cannes blog posts.

When it comes to actors, there is no obvious contender, expect for Adrian Titieni (Baccalauréat) and Gaspard Ulliel (It’s Only The End Of The World). As for the Palme d’Or, there has been some buzz about Kleber Mendonça Filho, Xavier Dolan, Paul Verhoeven and Asghar Farhadi but for us, it’s probably Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, Xavier Dolan’s irritating It’s Only The End Of The World), Nicolas Winding Refn’s Neon Demon, Bruno Dumont’s Ma Loute and Paul Verhoeven’s Elle which left us the most undeniable mark, mostly because of their exuberance. On the other hand, Cristi Puiu’s Sieranevada, Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’Rosa, Cristian Mungiu’s Baccalauréat and Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman impressed with their precise direction and visual artistry. In the end, there is no sure favorite, this year’s selection proving to be strong but failing to reach greatness.
