Today’s red carpet arrival highlight was undoubtedly the presence of Julia Roberts making her debut at the Cannes festival, accompanied by George Clooney and Dominic West for the premiere of Money monster, a failed satire of the media and finance worlds from Jodie Foster.

Besides Ms. Foster’s film which was presented out of competition, Mohamed Diab’s Clash opened Certain Regard while Alain Guiraudie’s Rester vertical and Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake were screened in competition. Mr. Guiraudie’s movie was honest, oneiric and quirky while Mr. Loach’s delivered one of his signature works about people fighting the system. With both movies taking spectators on familiar ground, the official Cannes selection is so far robust but hasn’t been delivering any thrill yet.
