Cannes film festival 2016: Lily Rose

Cannes film festival 2016 Blog: day 3 with Lily Rose Depp (c) Moland Fengkov

Everyday there are at least a couple stars or events stealing the show at the festival. Yesterday it was George Clooney and Julia Roberts walking the red carpet barefoot.

Today there was homage to Prince with a screening of Purple Rain on the beach as well as the premiere of Bruno Dumont’s surrealist and amusing Ma Loute. While iconic French actor Fabrice Lucchini’s antics are certainly one of this movie’s highlight, without a doubt  newcomer Lily Rose Depp who steals the show, which isn’t surprising since she’s Hollywood royalty – her parents are Johnny Deep and French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis. Next to her, the rest of the cast which includes Garpar Ulliel, Soko et Mélanie Thierry looks surprisingly transparent even though the young model only has a supporting role. She leaves her mark, very convincing as a seductive, ambitious and manipulative dancer.

When it comes to sidebars, Stéphanie Di Giusto’s is certainly a strong entry in the Certain Regard selection. Technically impressive, most particularly when it comes to lighting, it almost made us feel like we were watching a succession of paintings by Flemish masters.  Not bad for a debut!
