New Blu Ray Releases This Week: June 29th 2015: Today's PicksCompared to last Tuesday, this week has more to offer when it comes to Blu-Ray releases. Criterion is bringing us Jaromil Jire’s Valerie and her Week of Wonders, a Czechoslovak New Wave film which I’m looking forward to watch – if you have Hulu+, you might get a chance to stream it as most of Criterion’s catalog is available on that platform.

Action fans can catch Sean Penn shooting his way through a bunch of bad government guys in The Gunman while post-apocalyptic fans can enjoy some Escape from New York/Mad Max Italian rip-offs thanks to Blue Underground’s releases of The New Barbarians & Escape from the Bronx – please note those two guilty pleasures were directed by spaghetti western specialist Enzo G. Castellari whose Franco Nero-starrer Keoma is one of my favorites.

In a different genre, Shout! Factory is releasing Penelope Spheeris’s The Decline of Western Civilization, a 1981 documentary about the Los Angeles hardcore punk scene featuring Black Flag, the Germs and more …

As for our pick, it undoubtedly goes to David Zellner’s intriguing Kumiko the Treasure Hunter about a Japanese woman looking for Fargo’s lost treasure, which is, believe or not, based on a true story.
