One of my favorite movies last year, Aferim! feels like a transposition of a vintage western set in 19th century Romania. Taking on subjects as diverse as Gypsies, Jews, homosexuality, the world being flat, justice, corruption, unfaithfulness, Radu Jude’s movie offers a cynical and amusing portrait of ignorance and 19th century beliefs. With its black and white cinematography, Aferim! refers to classic works such as Akira Kurosowa’s Seven Samourai, John Ford’s The Searchers and Andrei Tarkovski’s Andrei Rublev. You can read my review of Aferim! here.

Possession Blu RayDirected by the provocative Polish writer/director Andrzej Żuławski and starring French actress Isabelle Adjani who won best actress at the Cannes film festival for this film, Possession is a disturbing and atypical horror film, which proves to be both fascinating and hard to watch. This is the special edition uncut version presented in a nice packaging by MondoVision.

Dr. Strangelove Blu-ray

Starring Peter Sellers, written and directed the great Stanley Kubrick (between Lolita and 2001) , Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a black and white anti-war satire set in the Cold War that needs no introduction and is getting Blu-Ray treatment, courtesy of the Criterion Collection.
